Scranton, PA SEO

An SEO company for Scranton and NEPA.

Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are twenty minutes apart on I-81 and search like two cities that would rather not be confused for each other. We run SEO for businesses across northeastern Pennsylvania: the map pack in each city, the pages for the valley towns between them, and the reviews that bring the call from Lackawanna and Luzerne counties alike.

By SEO Locale, in-house since 2015 and based just outside Philadelphia.

The Short Version

How we run SEO across northeastern Pennsylvania.

Reading the NEPA market

Scranton, Dunmore and the Abingtons; Wilkes-Barre, Kingston and the Back Mountain; Pittston and the valley between; Hazleton to the south and the Poconos to the east. The audit maps where your customers search from and which part your competitors hold.

Google Business Profile for two counties

Categories, service areas, photos and reviews that name both cities and the towns between them, so the profile shows in the three-pack for the one the customer typed.

Every keyword checked weekly

Every keyword is checked weekly in SEOApp, the rank tracker we built, and the monthly report shows rankings, calls and forms together from your own analytics.

Content written for the valley

Service pages and posts that name the neighborhoods and the towns. A contractor in Clarks Summit and a practice near the Wilkes-Barre hospitals need different pages, and both get them.

Why Scranton businesses hire a Philadelphia agency

Why Scranton businesses hire a Philadelphia agency

Northeastern Pennsylvania is two hours up the Turnpike from our office and a very different market: older, more loyal, and served by businesses that have been in the same families for generations. The search competition is thin. Most map packs in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are held by profiles that were claimed once and never touched, which means a business that completes its profile, publishes real pages and asks for reviews can hold its category across the region within a year. We bring the process from a market where every ranking is contested to one where most competitors have not tried, and we have done it for clients across the state.

From Courthouse Square to the Back Mountain

From Courthouse Square to the Back Mountain

The region’s businesses live in downtown Scranton and along the Dunmore and Moosic corridors, in Clarks Summit and the Abingtons to the north, along Wyoming Avenue through Kingston and the Back Mountain west of Wilkes-Barre, around the hospitals in both cities, and in the warehouses and industrial parks that have grown along I-81 and I-84. Each is its own search, and the campaign builds a page for the ones you serve, a profile whose service areas name them, and reviews that mention them. The Pennsylvania page covers the state; this one is about the valley.

Why Scranton Is Different

Two cities, one interstate, and a customer who knows the difference.

Scranton and Wilkes-Barre share a media market, an airport and a highway, and nothing else. A Scranton customer searching for a roofer types Scranton or Dunmore or Clarks Summit; a Wilkes-Barre customer types Wilkes-Barre or Kingston or Hazleton. A business that serves both has to say so on two sets of pages, and a business that serves one should not pay to rank in the other.

I had a really good impression of Nick and the team but unfortunately they significantly underdelivered on what was promised. With two days left after our first month all we had received was a list of keywords and a few articles that were almost certainly AI generated, about 20%…

FAQ

Questions from Scranton businesses

The ones we hear on the first call, answered the way we answer them there.

Do you work with businesses in Scranton from Philadelphia?

Yes. Scranton is two hours up the Turnpike from our office in Montgomeryville, so a kickoff at your office is an option, and the rest runs the way it does for every client: a shared dashboard, weekly rank checks in SEOApp, a monthly review with your strategist and a phone number that gets answered.

Should we target Scranton, Wilkes-Barre or both?

Whichever your trucks or your patients actually come from. The two are separate result pages, and a business in one does not rank in the other without pages and reviews for it. The home page names your city; pages for the other city and the valley towns cover the rest if you serve them.

Our site is old. Does that matter?

In NEPA it is often the main problem. A site that does not work on a phone, loads slowly or has no page for each service will not rank no matter how good the profile is. The audit says whether the site needs fixing or rebuilding before the SEO can work, and we build sites in-house.

How long does it take to rank in Scranton?

Map pack gains from the profile and citation work usually show within two to three months, and faster here than in Philadelphia because the competition is lighter. Organic rankings for the service pages build over four to eight months. The audit gives a timeline for your category.

How do you report results?

Every keyword is checked weekly in SEOApp, the rank tracker we built, and you get a login. The monthly report shows rankings, traffic, calls and forms from your own analytics, and the strategist walks you through it. Nothing is a screenshot.

Is there a contract?

No. Every agreement is month to month. The plan is explained before you pay for it, and you can stop when the work stops being worth it.

Scranton searches by city, by town and by county line

Lackawanna and Luzerne counties are separate result pages for almost every local search. Local SEO and Google Business Profile SEO are built for the city the business is in first: the profile’s address and categories, the service pages that name Scranton or Wilkes-Barre, and the reviews from customers there. Then the campaign extends across the county line with pages for the other city and the towns between, Pittston, Dunmore, Kingston, Clarks Summit, Dallas, and a service area that says so. A business that drives to both cities gets both sets; one that does not gets the one it needs and no wasted pages.

Who you compete with

The map packs across NEPA are held by long-established businesses with old profiles and few reviews. Google trusts their age, which is the only thing standing between a newer business with a complete profile and the three-pack. The campaign closes the gap with completeness, content and a review stream, which the incumbents do not have.

What we do first for a Scranton business

The free audit, reviewed by a person, comes first. It covers where you sit in the Scranton or Wilkes-Barre map pack and the organic results for the searches that bring calls, who sits above you, what their profiles and sites carry that yours does not, and the technical faults on your site. The profile and citations are fixed in the first month. The service pages are rewritten next. Pages for the other city and the valley towns follow, and the review process is set up to run from your own software.

Paid search and the site

Paid Advertising covers the searches worth buying before the rankings arrive, and Web Design & Development rebuilds the site when the audit shows it is the thing holding the rankings back, which in NEPA is often the case: many of the region’s business sites date from the last decade and do not work on a phone.

Logistics, healthcare and the Poconos

The region’s growth is in the distribution centers along I-81 and I-380, the two hospital systems and the colleges in both cities. The businesses that serve them, staffing, trucking, industrial services, occupational health, search regionally and nationally, and for them the local program protects the name and the office while a National SEO program carries the rest. The practices, contractors, restaurants and shops that serve the residents are local, and the map pack is the whole game.

The Poconos are a separate market to the east, searched by visitors who type the resort town rather than the county. A business that serves them gets pages written for the visitor, which is a different page from the one a Scranton resident reads. SEO starts at $500 a month and there is no contract.

Other Services

A business in NEPA is found on a map before it is found on a page, so Local SEO and Google Business Profile SEO come first, with Web Design & Development behind them for the site the calls come through and Paid Advertising for the searches worth buying while the rankings build.
