Maryland SEO

SEO for businesses across Maryland.

Maryland is a small state with five different markets: Baltimore and its county, the Howard County corridor between the two cities, the Washington suburbs of Montgomery and Prince George’s, Annapolis and the Bay, and Frederick and the west. We run SEO for Maryland businesses from our office two hours up I-95: the map pack in each market, the pages for the towns, and the reviews that bring the call.

The Short Version

How we run SEO across the state.

Reading the Maryland market

Baltimore and the county around it; Howard County and the corridor; Montgomery and Prince George’s on the Washington side; Annapolis and Anne Arundel; Frederick, Hagerstown and the west; the Eastern Shore. The audit maps where your customers search from and which market your competitors hold.

Google Business Profile by metro

Categories, service areas and reviews built for the metro the business is in, so the profile shows in the three-pack for Baltimore searches, Washington-suburb searches or both, depending on where the trucks go.

The tracker we built, reporting to you

Every keyword is checked weekly in SEOApp, the rank tracker we built, and the monthly report shows rankings, calls and forms together from your own analytics.

Content written for each market

Service pages and posts that name the county, the town and the neighborhood. A contractor in Glen Burnie, a firm in Bethesda and a practice in Frederick need different pages, and each gets them.

Why Maryland businesses hire a Philadelphia agency

Why Maryland businesses hire a Philadelphia agency

Maryland is two hours down I-95 from our office, and we already serve it from Baltimore, Howard County and Dundalk. The state’s search competition runs from thin, in Frederick and on the Shore, to as hard as anywhere in the country, in Bethesda and downtown Baltimore, and the process we run in Philadelphia is built for the hard end. A Maryland business gets the same strategist, the same writers and the same tracker, with the pages and the profile built for the metro it is in.

From the Inner Harbor to Frederick

From the Inner Harbor to Frederick

Maryland’s businesses live downtown and in the neighborhoods of Baltimore, in Towson, Catonsville and the county around it, in Columbia’s village centers and Ellicott City, along Rockville Pike and in Silver Spring and Bethesda, in Annapolis and the Anne Arundel suburbs, in Frederick’s downtown and the growing county around it, and across the bridge on the Shore. Each is its own search, and the campaign builds a page for the ones you serve, a profile whose service areas name them, and reviews that mention them.

Why Maryland Is Different

Two metros, one state, and a customer who commutes between them.

A Maryland customer may live in Columbia, work in Bethesda and see a dentist in Ellicott City, and they search from all three. The Baltimore market and the Washington market overlap along I-95 and Route 29 in a way no other state has, and a business in the middle competes with firms from both cities. The campaign has to decide which metro, which county and which town the business is really selling to before it writes a page.

SEO Locale has been handling the marketing for our company, Sector Bay Laundry, for about 6 months. We moved on from another company, and the work ethic and responsiveness have been a night and day difference. I can't point out one specific person because the entire team as…

SEO Locale has been incredible to work with. We had been using another company before them, and the results were very poor so partnering with SEO Locale was a breath of fresh air. From day one the difference in communication, professionalism, and results was obvious. Nick and…

I had a really good impression of Nick and the team but unfortunately they significantly underdelivered on what was promised. With two days left after our first month all we had received was a list of keywords and a few articles that were almost certainly AI generated, about 20%…

FAQ

Questions from Maryland businesses

The ones we hear on the first call, answered the way we answer them there.

Do you work with businesses in Maryland from Philadelphia?

Yes. Baltimore is two hours down I-95 from our office in Montgomeryville and Bethesda an hour past it, so a kickoff at your office is an option, and the rest runs the way it does for every client: a shared dashboard, weekly rank checks in SEOApp, a monthly review with your strategist and a phone number that gets answered.

Should we target Baltimore, Washington or both?

Whichever your customers actually come from, and the audit tells us. A business in Columbia or Laurel often draws from both and gets pages for both; a business in Towson is Baltimore and should not pay to rank in Rockville. The home page names the town; the pages for the rest cover what the trucks actually reach.

We sell to the federal government. Is local SEO relevant?

Less than for a practice, but not zero. A firm near Fort Meade or in Bethesda still wants to own its name, its address and the searches from the organizations around it. The main program for a government contractor is national SEO, and the two run together.

How long does it take to rank in Maryland?

It depends on the metro. Frederick, the Shore and the Baltimore suburbs move within two to three months from the profile work. Bethesda, Columbia and downtown Baltimore are contested and the organic rankings take six to twelve months. The audit gives a timeline for your market rather than a generic one.

How do you report results?

Every keyword is checked weekly in SEOApp, the rank tracker we built, and you get a login. The monthly report shows rankings, traffic, calls and forms from your own analytics, and the strategist walks you through it. Nothing is a screenshot.

Is there a contract?

No. Every agreement is month to month. The plan is explained before you pay for it, and you can stop when the work stops being worth it.

Maryland searches by metro, by county and by town

The Baltimore market searches as Baltimore and by neighborhood and suburb: Towson, Dundalk, Catonsville, Glen Burnie, Owings Mills. The Washington side searches by town and never by Washington: Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Bowie, Laurel. The corridor between them, Columbia, Ellicott City and Laurel, is searched from both directions. Annapolis is its own market with the Bay and the Naval Academy behind it, and Frederick is a city of its own with a county growing around it. Local SEO and Google Business Profile SEO are built for the metro the business is in, then extended with town pages and service areas for the counties it actually drives to.

Who you compete with

In Bethesda, Columbia and downtown Baltimore the map packs are contested by businesses that have done the work, and the campaign has to be complete to pass them. In Frederick, Hagerstown and the Shore they are held by old profiles, and completeness alone moves a business into the three-pack within months.

What we do first for a Maryland business

The free audit, reviewed by a person, comes first. It covers where you sit in the map pack and the organic results for the searches that bring calls in your metro, who sits above you, what their profiles and sites carry that yours does not, and the technical faults on your site. The profile and citations are fixed in the first month. The service pages are rewritten next. Town and county pages follow, and the review process is set up to run from your own software.

Government contractors and the firms that sell statewide

Maryland has more businesses that sell to the federal government than almost any state, around Fort Meade, Aberdeen, Bethesda and the agencies in the Washington suburbs. For them the local program protects the name and the office, and a National SEO program carries the searches that come from the agencies and the primes. Paid Advertising covers the searches worth buying while the rankings build.

The Bay, the seasons and the second location

Annapolis and the Shore run on a season: boating, the Bay, the summer towns and the visitors who search for them from Washington and Baltimore. A business there gets pages written for the visitor, strong by spring, and a profile with hours that are true in July. The rest of the state runs on the calendars of its industries: the school year for the practices in the suburbs, the storms for the contractors, the fiscal year for the firms that sell to the government.

Maryland businesses that grow usually grow into the other metro, and the SEO follows: a second office in Columbia or Bethesda gives the map pack a second center, and without one, town pages and service areas carry the business as far as the trucks go. The Washington, DC page covers the District; this one covers the state around it. SEO starts at $500 a month and there is no contract.

Other Services

A Maryland business is found on a map before it is found on a page, so Local SEO and Google Business Profile SEO come first. For the searches worth buying now, Paid Advertising runs alongside, and for the contractors and firms that sell to the agencies and beyond, National SEO.
